Adventures of an Arctic Chihuahua
Living Small at the Far EdgeMorning Poems
Coffee
Black crows
Two flocks
Leapfrog
To the best perches.
Between,
One gull
Beats hard,
White against full gusts
I do not feel.
Footsteps
Slap wood
Dockside
Where the ice-rain stings.
Earlier,
My index finger
Brushed your cheek
And you made coffee.

Arctic Tints
Ochre, burnt sienna,
Waxy blue gray, olive green,
Chocolate brown,
Green gray, green blue,
Deep jade, calico.
Shimmering teal,
Rusty umber,
Tints of tundra.
Late,
Lazy sunrise,
Lilac silhouette,
Ric-rac cloud,
Bands of soft peach dog.
Tussocks, antlers,
Water so low.
Currents against the swift,
Enameled camp
Up-river.
Caribou caught on the ice,
Taupe.
Guns all ’round.
Poor things,
We don’t know where to run.
