Lotta people in Alaska have dogs. Many of them will sacrifice the dogs to the bears in order to have time to 'get away'... my dad pays huge amounts of money for his 'bear dogs'. They are specially trained to 'worry 'the bear while my dad sprints for his rifle. This is in McCarthy, where he has his homestead. The thing about bears is: You can SMELL them from a mile away , usually. They smell like rotting salmon in a landfill. Just so you know. And they are unpredictable as hell.
F.Y.I.-- no one really knows what to do if they encounter a bear. All those stories you hear: each attack is different. It's best to just be cautious as hell. I know two people in Alaska that have been mauled by bears: one's a pilot in McCarthy and the other one owns Huffman Horse Center. He got mauled IN ANCHORAGE... and credits his dogs for saving his life.
